If he wins, expect more tax increases.
The two largest recipients of state spending have picked their man. This weekend, the California Teachers’ Association endorsed Eric Swalwell for governor. Yesterday, the California Hospital Association did the same. In endorsing Swalwell, they join SEIU’s state council, the statewide firefighters’ union (CPF), and other organizations that make their livings off of state spending.
It’s the smart move for them. Together their members garner upwards of $80 billion of annual state spending and Swalwell has made it clear that his top priority is more revenues from which to expand spending on them. They also benefit from thousands of state statutes that protect them from competition and reduce the level of work required to collect money.
In his first four years, the next governor will spend more than $2 trillion and enact ~4000 new laws. CTA, CHA, SEIU, CPF and others who make their livings off state spending and laws know how to play the game.
