The Mistakes That Matter

We can’t help but notice all the press about Governor Newsom’s acknowledged mistake in attending a dinner that didn’t meet state guidelines for gathering during COVID-19. We tend to be forgiving about such personal mistakes that have little to no bearing on the daily lives of Californians, which are much more affected by policy and performance. For example, here is a mistake with a huge impact on daily lives:

Other mistakes include poor service for the unemployed, failure to utilize affordable housing monies, laws requiring schools to lay off teachers in reverse order of hiring, licensing rules that protect cronies and reduce service for citizens, and much more.

In 2019-20, GFC’s network of >800 members and 15 chapters donated $3.6 million to >100 legislators, candidates, caucuses and parties, all with an eye to improving the daily lives of Californians. Govern For California supports lawmakers who serve the general interest.

PS: We hope today’s news is headlined by LAO’s report of robust state revenues and greatly improved outlook for school funding (none of which should come as a surprise to anyone following the monthly Finance Bulletins issued by the Department of Finance). Lawmakers should turn their attention to making sure that money reaches classrooms and teachers.
